Microsoft Renames Windows Defender Advanced Protection Against Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection Threats – Because: The Solution Also Appears for Mac.
Microsoft announces that it will also make its Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) Defender security solution available for Mac. ATP Defender is Microsoft's enterprise security solution and should not be confused with Defender security software built into Windows 10. Defender ATP is rather a terminal protection platform that Mac support can also use for mixed client environments. The extension of the Mac platform will also change the name of the solution. Instead of Windows Defender ATP, it will be called Microsoft Defender ATP.
Microsoft Defender ATP for Mac currently only has a limited preview and antivirus solution that can be administered centrally through the Defender ATP portal. The ATP Defender client runs on MacOS Mojave, High Sierra and Sierra. As part of the preview, virus protection can be configured and scans can be performed. In addition, threats can be badyzed via the Defender ATP portal and action can be taken. Some settings can also be disabled by the administrator via Intune or a Mac Management Console, so that the user can not set any settings themselves. The solution is also updated on Macs via Microsoft Autoupdate. The ability to deploy and configure the client through Intune will be added soon.
In addition, Microsoft plans to expand the Mac solution in the coming months to include endpoint detection and response, as well as threat and vulnerability management. Defender ATP was released only on Windows 7 and 8.1 in February.
It is not known if the consumer version of Microsoft Defender for Mac should appear one day. Microsoft Defender ATP customers interested in the overview can apply on this page.
