The super worm is installed remotely
As the software giant writes in a blog entry, a new super-virus has been discovered, aimed primarily at older, but still prevalent Windows versions. Here, a vulnerability (CVE-2019-0708) in Remote Desktop Services can be exploited to infect computers remotely in a malicious way. Similar to WannaCry, such attacks are also possible in which the computer worm proliferates independently.
Emergency patch
All users who use a version of Windows older than 8.x or 10. These include the United States Windows 7, Vista, and XP. For these, there is no security update. Due to the huge threat, Microsoft has again released an emergency fix for the old operating system.
Install updates immediately
The software manufacturer now recommends that all users of older versions of Windows immediately install the new security updates (left below). This is the only way to prevent another, more global attack on the Wannacry scale.
Disable Remote Desktop Service
The German Federal Office of Information Security (BSI) gives further advice to all concerned. Experts recommend that, in addition to the update, Remote Desktop Service be disabled. This is not necessary in many cases. It should only be activated if it is really necessary. The deactivation can be found in the Control panel in the System and Security menu (System> Remote Settings>, clear the "Allow remote support connections with this computer" check box).
