Microsoft kills the Zune player after five years of unsuccessful attempts to compete with the Apple iPod.
The Zune is interrupted due to weak sales in progress, Bloomberg reports. It will not be refreshed when the current units are exhausted.
When introducing the Zune in 2006, Microsoft Brown had predicted that the player would overtake Apple one day. But he did not even manage to break the first five MP3 players. According to NDP, Apple held 77% of the market in 2010.
"MSFT has abandoned the last sign of Zune AAPL, which has totally dominated portable music over the past decade," tweeted industry badyst Michael Gartenberg. "Sony, Samsung, Dell have failed to move the needle."
Gartenberg also predicted that tablets would be the next Zune.
Pundit Paul Kedrosky m said: "My main reaction to the announcement that Microsoft will stop selling Zunes is … Microsoft still selling Zunes?"
Instead of selling hardware drives, Microsoft will focus on using Zune on smartphones running Windows OS.
With its world-clbad design, Microsoft's young, hip image and innovative commercials like the one below, is it any wonder that the Zune has not taken off?
(This is a joke, from elsewhere)
