We are decades away from the time when “Die hard meeting ____ “was an action genre in itself, but movie mash-ups like this are always a lot of fun. That’s part of why director Jean-François Richet’s pitch The plane seems surprisingly convincing. Based on this hollywood reporter story, the movie sounds a bit like it could be Air conditioning meets Castaway meets Captain Phillips-or maybe replace Air conditioning with a film by Tom Hanks quite similar. The plane stars Gerard Butler as Brodie Torrance, a sort of hero pilot who makes an emergency landing after his plane was damaged (no, no Tom Hanks movies that are like that), but the rub is that his plane lands “in hostile territory” on an island ruled by “militant pirates” who want to take the passengers of the plane hostage.

Fun, isn’t it? Well, it’s getting better: Mike Colter from Bad and Luke Cage will also be there, playing a guy named Louis Gaspare who is described as a “cold-headed ex-serviceman extradited to Canada for manslaughter when plane crashes on a dangerous remote island.” This is also the point where things get confused, as it’s not entirely clear whether Louis Gaspare was on Brodie Torrance’s plane when he was extradited to Canada, or whether it was from a separate plane crash and have these pirates run an island that’s just riddled with crashed planes, but Mike Colter will be there anyway as some sort of heavyweight who maybe killed someone (which seems potentially counter-type for him, which is funny).

Is this gonna be a good movie? We have no idea (Richet hasn’t made a ton of movies Americans will know about, the most famous probably being the Attack on the enclosure 13 remake), but it certainly looks like an enticing mess of a stew.
