"The club wishes to thank Leonardo for his important contributions that have helped to move the club into a new era and wish him the best for his future career.
"An announcement on the appointment of a new sports director will be made in due course."
Milan general manager Ivan Gazidis also commented on the problem: "Leonardo joined AC Milan at the time of need a few weeks before the closure of the window of the summer transfers.
"In very difficult circumstances, he put his heart and soul to the service of an extremely complex situation and transmitted his energy and ambition to the team.
"I am very grateful to Leonardo for all that he has brought to our great club and wish him luck in his future endeavors."
The news comes soon after the announcement that the director Gennaro Gattuso would also leave the club a few days after Milan failed to qualify for the Champions League, finishing just one point outside the first four last dramatic day of the season in Serie A.
