The overlord of the traditional area of Wala, Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, praised the military high command for promptly punishing soldiers who brutally brutalized civilians in Wa over an allegedly missing phone.
He said Army Chief of Staff Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah kept his promise to get to the bottom of it when he visited his palace a day after the incident.
The Wa Naa therefore called on those affected directly or indirectly by the act to forgive the military and to console themselves by saying that; “To err is human and forgiveness is divine”.
“The leadership of the army, having realized that their men were very much wrong, and moved forward to take serious action against them, is sufficient testimony to the fact that the high command does not tolerate such unruly behavior from his men and we must therefore forgive them, ”he said.
The Wa Naa was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, through its secretary, Naa Kadri Ibrahim, the Jinpenhi Naa, this weekend.
“As the men involved are losing their ranks, what took them years to acquire is not an average punishment and we have to let the past go,” he added.
He expressed the hope that the high command would continue to take measures to ensure that such misconduct does not recur in the region.
He commended the Defense Ministry for agreeing to fully absorb the medical expenses of all those injured as a result of the brutality and urged the victims to forgive.
Wa Naa Pelpuo said forgiveness is important as the population would need the army and other security agencies to protect the city’s peace and security. They must therefore not allow this unfortunate act to tarnish the cordial relations that exist between them.
“Terrorist activities in neighboring countries are a threat to the country and the breakdown of relations between the military and citizens will affect intelligence gathering,” he said.
He urged residents to continue sharing highly relevant information with security personnel regarding threats of terrorism from neighboring Burkina Faso.
