Henry Quartey, the regional minister of Greater Accra appealed to the queens of the market to help bring traders back from the streets and sidewalks to the markets to allow the free movement of vehicles and people in the city.
He said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would launch a two-week public announcement asking traders to leave unauthorized places, and that “when persuasion fails, force must be applied.
“We’re not saying you shouldn’t eat or trade, but operate in the market then you wouldn’t have any problem with anyone,” he said and people should avoid to politicize the work of the assemblies.
Mr. Quartey made the call when he met with market leaders in Greater Accra to present his vision dubbed: “Let’s make Accra work” in improving cleanliness, safety, health and education in the region.
He said he had engaged stakeholders such as the executive heads of metropolitan, municipal and district regions, members of parliament, members of the regional coordinating council and former regional ministers from Greater Accra and that c It was the market queens’ turn to contribute their quota to the vision.
He called on the market leaders to organize meetings with street traders to find places for them in the market and in doing so they would pay taxes to increase the income generation of the assemblies.
“As mothers, I have met you today to share my vision with you and help me make Accra clean. Let us guide the people with the laws of the land so that we all coexist peacefully, ”Quartey said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had said he would make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, so let’s unite to support the agenda.
Mr Quartey said there would be no beach activities over the Easter holidays as police personnel would be there to check on vacationers.
In an open forum, market queens declared their support for the minister’s vision and advocated for the security of their markets and the resolution of land disputes.
