With the resurgence of cases of dengue in some islands in the region, the Ministry of Health encourages people to get rid of mosquitoes or avoid creating them.
Speaking as part of a popular social media program, the Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health, George Mitchell, said that the Grenadians had a responsibility to do things their way to help to combat mosquito breeding sites.
"What we want to emphasize is that we have a responsibility in the Ministry of Health, but the people, our people, we call on them to do everything in their power to ensure that mosquito breeding sites do not there is no mosquito population, "he said.
"… If the mosquito does not find sites in which to reproduce, it can not multiply, it is the key message that is transmitted. This is … all containers that can hold water, especially clean water around the house. This is essential because the mosquito Aiedes Aegypti is what we call the type of mosquito that loves homes and people. They love to live in this kind of environment, which creates a problem for them, "he added.
According to Dr. Mitchell, although dengue fever is endemic in Grenada, with the number of strains attached to the disease, it is likely that dengue fever is seriously affecting the country.
"You know that there are four strains of Dengue – Denque, one, two, three and four. Sometimes you have variations and what happens if one of the strains circulating in another country arrives here, we have a naive population and so the impact is a lot more.
"This is similar to what happened in the case of Zika and ChikV: although it was two diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, they were new to the population and spread so like a wild fire. In dengue cases, we have dengue fever circulating in Grenada, dengue fever is endemic, but every time new strains of badociations are reintroduced, the population finds it naive and spreads a little.
Dr. Mitchell revealed that the Ministry of Health is implementing preventive measures such as "fogging and lava sites in areas where, based on our monitoring, we know we have a high number of mosquitoes ".
