The NDC minority group in parliament insists on knowing the volume of the government’s share in the Aker and AGM oil blocs to prove whether the figures provided by the government are correct.

“In principle, we are not against increasing the state’s stake in the blocks of Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum, but we will insist that further validation is carried out to prove that the figures provided by the government are accurate, ”the minority said at a press briefing in Accra.

The caucus, however, welcomed the government’s intention to increase its stake in the deep-water blocks of Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum.

Mr John Jinapor, a senior member of the Energy Committee, along with some members of the minority, revealed this after the joint meeting of the Finance and Energy Committee, which was reportedly attended by participated the Minister of Finance, to address reporters on the government’s plan to increase its stake in Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum.

Mr Jinapor said the minority had insisted at the joint finance and energy committee meeting in parliament that more work needed to be done in terms of further validation and proof of the figures provided.

He gave the assurance that the minority was committed to ensuring that the law is done.

“We have made it clear to the government that it should go back and do all of this work, bring it to us so that we can have a closer look,” Jinapor added.

He said the minority would like to deal with each request and memorandum on a case-by-case basis, rather than checking the memorandum in an omnibus fashion.

The Ghana National Petroleum Authority (GNPC) through its Exploration and Production Company Limited (GNPC Explorco) intends to purchase a 37 percent stake in the operated Deep Water Tano / Cape Three Points (DWT / CTP) by Aker Energy Ghana Limited and a 70 percent stake in South Deep Water Tano (SDWT) operated by AGM Petroleum Ghana Limited.

To this end, the Minister of Energy, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has asked Parliament to give its approval which would allow GNPC to acquire stakes in the oil blocks of Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum.

Dr Prempeh called on Parliament to have the power to agree a purchase price with Aker Energy Ghana Limited and AGM Petroleum Ghana Limited alongside the Minister of Finance.

Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin therefore referred the request to the finance and energy committees.
