The Mitsubishi Outlander has a pretty decent ride, but it is not as refined as the best SUVs. There is still a lot of wind noise on the highway and the noisy diesel idle never reaches a quieter tone, though it is clouded by the noise of tires on the highway. Everything is much quieter and smoother with the Outlander PHEV Hybrid – even if it gets noisy when you demand all the power.

Handiness is predictable (but not remote) and the Outlander is usually an easy-to-drive car – the steering is well-weighted, reasonably accurate and the brakes are powerful.

Driving is quite comfortable in the diesel models, but the added weight of the PHEV gives it a feeling of firmness and anxiety over big bumps in the city. Most homeowners are willing to accept this in return for a fuel economy. Off-road, the Outlander is quite capable, with a locking center reinforcing its capabilities. If you plan to get off the road, the diesel model should be your choice, as it comes with a 4WD locking mode for more difficult terrain. In comparison, the PHEV has only four-wheel drive because of the rear-mounted electric motor: there is no drive shaft connecting the front and rear axles, so you depend on the car's electronics to feed the most adherent wheels.

The 148 hp diesel engine provides 380 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm, giving it a feeling of power when accelerating from low speeds or when exiting junctions. It will go from 0 to 62 mph in 10.2 seconds (11.6 seconds in automatic) and will reach its maximum at 124 mph. Total performance should not be neglected. It's a perfectly fine unit, though.

The 2.0-liter gasoline also has 148 hp, but reaches a speed of 6,000 rpm, while the maximum torque of 195 Nm is available from 4,200 rpm. Combine that with the standard CVT gearbox and the Petrol Outlander is a pretty lethargic performer, delivering a 0 to 20 km / h time of 13.3 seconds.

PHEV is another type of fish. The combination of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine coupled with two 60-kW electric motors gives a combined power of 204 hp, while torque arrives instantly. You can navigate silently in electric mode for an estimated distance of 28 miles (28 km), ask for the full power of both, or let the engine decide how best to use each power source. It is not fast, but it is gentle and relaxing to drive most of the time.
