Jurgen Klopp told his Liverpool stars that beating Tottenham was more important than playing well.

Toby Alderweireld needed a lucky goal to defeat the Spurs and return to the top of the Premier League.

Alderweireld thwarted Hugo Lloris' attempt to push Mo Salah's head back into playtime after the Reds struggled to dominate the formation north of London.

And the Egyptian Salah revealed exactly what Klopp had said to his players in the locker room after the match as the title race was getting ready.

"I went to the locker room and spoke to the director," Salah told Sky Sports.

"He said it was not good to play but the most important thing was to find a way to earn points.

"Big teams always find a way to get the points.

"Today we did not play at the top of our game but we won the game which is the most important – it's a great team."

Despite the average performance, the Reds managed to return to the top of the Premier League and overtake Manchester City.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring with a header before Lucas Moura seemed to slow down his title race.

But the awkward moment of Belgian Alderweireld settled the match and Salah insists that the incredible noise of the Liverpool fans helped to put the result above the line.

"Kop today, it was crazy, they just want to win the Premier League and we are doing everything to make it happen, they help us a lot during the match, everything changes with the fans – always.

"I think the fans gave me the goal! A goal is a goal.

"The important thing was to get three points, I have not scored in two games, but some players have the same number of goals as me but live the season of their life, I'm supposed to have a bad season!"
