Moeller's win over Lakewood St. Edward (72-52) sends Crusaders to Saturday's championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Moeller basketball team is back in Division I of the final state for a third consecutive season.

The Crusaders shot 67% of their 72-52 win over Lakewood St. Edward on Friday night in the semifinal at Schottenstein Center.

"We are delighted with the way we have played and we think we can even play better," said Moeller coach Carl Kremer. "We can not wait to play tomorrow. I am really happy with our guys. "

Moeller (28-0) has won his 48th consecutive game and is 83-4 in the 2016-17 season. The Crusaders have not lost any matches since December 30, 2017, when they fell 47 to 44 in front of the Charter of the Imhotep Institute of Philadelphia.

The crusaders will play Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (24-3) in the final state at 8:30 pm Saturday. Moeller beaten visiting St. Vincent-St. Marie 99-62 on December 8th.

"I think our preparation will be the same every game," said Miles McBride, Moeller's senior guard. "We will go as hard as we can in the movie theater and as hard as we can during warm-ups and play."

McBride was 5 out of 5 with 13 points, five rebounds and three badists. Senior guard Alec Pfriem had 20 points, 10 rebounds and five badists.

Moeller shot 87.5% in the first quarter (7 out of 8) and 73% in the second quarter (8 out of 11).

"Our guys know where their shots are and they are patient enough to get the right shots," Kremer said. "So we were pretty good at it, but that half was especially good for us."

Striker Sophomore Alex Williams collected 12 points while junior striker Max Land added 11 points and five rebounds.

"I was joking a bit with my coaches and I said," They shoot at 90%? and they said, "No, 80," said St. Edward coach Eric Flannery, "It was like that, they are good players."

Moeller, state champion in 2018, tries to be the first Division I men's basketball champion to be unbeaten since Zanesville (26-0) in 1995. Moeller is the only undefeated team in the state tournament this week. This season, Ohio had 798 men's basketball schools in college.

St. Edward (19-9) was led by forward Devontae Blanton and forward Grant Huffman with 15 points each.

Senior guard Demetrius Terry had 12 points. Junior guard Montorie Foster had 12 points.
