A pregnant woman warns parents of the dangers of cold sores for babies after the death of her eight-week-old daughter.
Contact with cold sores, caused by a strain of herpes virus, can be fatal for less than six months.
Sophie Lebner, of New South Wales, Australia, was horrified to learn that Lottie 's health could have killed her in a few days.
By posting on Facebook to educate people, she wrote, "For a newborn, Herpes Simplex virus, within a few days of exposure, can spread to the brain and organs, causing permanent damage and death. it's not treated. "
Sharing her symptoms "with a tear at the eye," Sophie explained that Lottie had developed a liquid eye Sunday, which developed Monday into a reddish sore.
Thinking of having conjunctivitis, the chemist prescribed a dose of saline.
On Tuesday, Lottie had developed blistering red bumps around her eye and Sophie, worried, had made an appointment with her GP for the next day.
The mother added: "On Tuesday afternoon, I noticed two small red spots resembling spots on Lottie's left hand from where she had rubbed her eyes.
"Then I thought she could have her feet, hand and mouth.
"An hour later, Lottie was irritable and upset, nothing would comfort her, but she had no temperature and was generally much different …"
The doctor told us that it was very likely that we lost Lottie and that she was a real success.

Sophie called the maternal health nurse, who told her that she should go straight to A & E, where she and her sons Regan and Nate had a horrible wait for an hour and a half .
She said: "We saw a doctor who told us that Lottie was fine and that the rash would disappear after 10 days.
"And expect the situation to get worse before things get better, but she was fine, she had no temperature, she was not lethargic, she was fine and we would be well off go home.
"I interviewed this doctor and told him that I was still concerned about his eye.
"What if it was an infection and if it got into his eyes and could it cause permanent damage if it got worse?"
The doctor then phoned a pediatrician, who asked for images of Lottie's eye and immediately went to the hospital.
Sophie added: "He asked me if anyone could have had a cold sore around Lottie, I said yes." Lottie's father (Ben) had had a cold sore that week.
"He immediately told me about the herpes simplex virus and the danger it represented."
Lottie was put on antibiotic infusion during an intravenous infusion and was directed to the nearby Albury Children 's Room, where his parents could do nothing else but to wait for the onset of its symptoms.
A blood test was administered at the beginning but it took several days before the results were returned, which meant that "the only option" was to treat her as if she were infected with the virus.
Sophie said, "The tests came back positive." Lottie was actually infected with HSV but luckily we caught her before she went any further.
"The pediatrician told us that if we had not taken her to (A & E), if we had waited for the GP appointment the next day, if we had not asked the doctor more before, if we had gone home, if we had waited yet act, there was a great chance that we could have lost Lottie and that she was a real success.
"For now, Lottie is healing, still smiling and under 14-day intravenous antibiotic treatment followed by 6 months of oral antibiotics, weekly pediatric appointments and blood tests.
"We can not express how lucky we are.
"95% of the friends and family we talked to have no idea of the risk that a simple cold poses for a toddler ..
"We think there is absolutely not enough education on the badociated risks.
"If we had known there was such a thing and how terrible it is, we are sure that Lottie would not have to suffer that."
