Monaco GP qualifications: Bottas and Verstappen deplore cold Q3 tires – F1

Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen both blamed the cold tires for not improving on the final shot for the pole position of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix.

While Lewis Hamilton managed to beat his best lap of the weekend on his last Q3 run to take first place, Bottas and Verstappen had to abandon their run after the tire temperature struck them.

Both men had ideal course losses as they had to make their way through traffic, which meant that their tires were not in the ideal operating window for the start of their last descent.

Bottas, who was qualified for pole by teammate Mercedes, said: "My feelings for the moment are really very disappointed with qualifying.I really felt that I had the speed today. .

"I felt really good in the car all day, and in the first run, I felt I could improve two or three tenths, so I should have done a better job in the first run.

"In the second run, I had a lot of traffic off the track, so I had to leave the line in a few places and the tires just did not work in the second run, so disappointing. "

In addition to not being able to put his tires to the right temperature, Bottas said that overtaking slower cars had put him on fouled parts of the track, which had hindered his preparation.

"The problem was for me traffic on the map," added the Finn.

"There were a few cars that I was stuck with and had to overtake, and there was a lot of dust on the tires.

"If you can not get enough temperatures, then on this track, it is really essential.

"Already at Turn 1, I felt the tires were not there and every corner was getting slower and slower until I made a big jump at Turn 8. That's all. "

Red Bull rider Verstappen said he would at best have been able to reach three-tenths of the pole position, but he said any hope of splitting Mercedes cars was gone at the first corner of his last lap.

"When we look at the weekend, it only missed two or three tenths at the end," said Verstappen, who will start third.

"Q2 was a very good lap, the tires were on and that makes all the difference.

"In Q3, on my first race in Turn 1, the rear tires were not tight, I lost some time there.

"The rest of the round was pretty stable compared to Q2, so not bad.

"Then, my last run in Q3, I had some traffic on the exit and when I started the round, they had [the tyres] were just cold, and I was already two or three tenths so I decided to abort.

"In general, we did a good job, arriving this weekend, I felt that we were not as strong as last year, but for me, it was a good job. was a good qualification. "
