Accra, July 9, GNA – Reverend Professor
Emmanuel Asante, President of the National Peace Council, said that the monetization of
politics in the country continues to prevent well-qualified people from seeking
political office.
He said that there are a lot of bright people
ideas and with the good heart to serve the country but because of their incapacity
distribute money, they fail to go through the first steps within their
political parties.
Describe monetization in politics as disturbing
and a troubling trend, he said, it also spawned corruption, making
the expensive policy and this partly contributed to the rise of politics
vigilance.
Professor Asante said Monday at a
consultation of national stakeholders of the day on the monetization of organized politics
by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in Accra.
It was held under the theme: "Money,
Influence, corruption and capture: can Ghana's democracy be safeguarded?
Professor Asante stated that the syndrome of
monetization in politics led to the absence of patriotism and the state
capture phenomenon; and robbed the nation of its hard-earned reputation for peace
and development.
Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darkoh, Chief Director of
Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, said that monitization in politics is a serious
concerns all institutions and individuals that strengthen democracy.
"We recognize the immense contribution of
political parties to the country's democracy but we also recognize that
monitization in politics, which has encouraged elite control, corruption and
violence has disastrous consequences for the maintenance of democracy, "he said.
Dr. Aggrey-Darkoh said the forum would help
provide appropriate recommendations to curb monitization in politics.
Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minister of
Parliamentary Affairs, said the forum would encourage a national discourse on
monetization in politics and propose measures to dispel the anxiety.
He said that if care is not taken, the policy
position would rest only on the wealthy of society to the detriment of a
competency-based approach, which would affect the fundamental values of democracy
the governance.

Parliament, called for a concerted effort to debate issues without pbadion
