Warning: full spoilers follow for the ending of Monster Hunter.In the final act of Monster Hunter, Ron Perlman’s Admiral explains to Milla Jovovioch’s Captain Artemis that a huge, old build called Sky Tower is responsible for creating the portal that pulled her from ‘Our World’ ‘to “ The New World’ ‘, the main setting of Monster Hunter. While everyone in the New World is unable to understand Artemis, the Admiral is able to speak with her as he studied the English language from materials brought from our world by the Sky Tower.
The Sky Tower is roughly based on the Sky Corridor introduced in the Monster Hunter Frontier G6 game; a construction made by the ancient civilization that lived long before the present inhabitants of this world. This civilization was incredibly technologically advanced and harvested dragons and wyverns to create colossal towers that stretched above the clouds, as well as terrifying biological weapons.
In video games, ancient civilization was finally wiped out in the Great Dragon War as the monsters they slaughtered like cattle revolted. In the film, however, the admiral suspects that the link to our world, via the portal created by the Sky Tower, could be responsible for their disappearance. As such, the Admiral wishes to deactivate the Sky Tower and calls on Artemis to help her in exchange for helping her return to our world.
In the games, ancient civilization trained selected monsters to act as custodians of their buildings, which is probably why the Sky Tower in the movie is protected by what Anderson calls a ‘ Greater Rathalos ” (a larger version of the more popular game. Beast). Artemis, along with Tony Jaa’s Admiral and Hunter, prepare to defeat the Flying Wyvern, but Artemis is brought back through the Sky Tower portal to our world, along with the creature. On her own, Artemis is almost hopelessly outmatched, but the Admiral and the Hunter go through the portal to help her defeat the Rathalos.
In the final moments of the film, a second monster passes through the portal: a Gore Magala. Artemis agrees with the Admiral that they must return to the New World to close the Sky Tower and prevent more monsters from passing through the portal. And, in what is presumably meant to be a tantalizing cliffhanger rather than a frustrating cutoff point, the film rolls around just as Artemis, the Admiral, and the Hunter begin their attack on Gore Magala.
The choice to use Gore Magala is remarkable; it’s a major threat introduced in Monster Hunter 4, and so dangerous it could wipe out an entire population. It’s also so rare that it’s one of the few uncategorized creatures in the game’s bestiary. Additionally, the official Monster Hunter books have stated that Gore Magala is a young elder dragon, one of the main types. of monsters that ancient civilization collected and experienced. This particular Gore Magala may simply have been one of the many monsters trained to defend the Sky Tower, such as the Grand Rathalos. Or, maybe the suggestion is that this creature is responsible for destroying ancient civilization, given its reputation in games. Whatever happens, it seems clear that the streak is Anderson hinting at the direction he’d like to explore in any potential sequel.

But that’s not all. As the three heroes begin their attack on Gore Magala, they are observed from above by a mysterious hooded figure. Considering that much of the inspiration for the film lies in Monster Hunter World, it is likely to be The Seeker, a member of the Wyverian race (humanoids who are suggested as descendant of the Wyverns). In the game, he investigates the mysteries of Elder Crossing, a ritual that the Elder Dragons undertake when they die. Since Gore Magala is a Juvenile Elder Dragon, he may be there to observe what happens when he is killed.
Chief Felyne Meowscular is then seen arriving at the scene, demonstrating her fighting skills. It is not known, however, if he came to aid the hunters or to challenge the hooded figure. Before taking his meat cleaver and spice rack in the Monster Hunter World game, Meowscular Chef was the Admiral’s Palico companion, and so it makes sense that he could be a valuable asset in a fight, be it against Gore Magala or the mysterious observer. .And that’s about all there is to it. Unlike Anderson’s own Resident Evil movies or the plethora of comic book movies, there’s not much to dig here, or much more than a vague promise of “ more to come. ”
