Garbine Muguruza defended her title at the Monterrey Open after Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire as a result of a leg injury.
The former world number one, Azarenka, who was playing his first singles final in three years, needed a medical save after losing the first set to get straps on his right calf.
The 29-year-old Belarusian continued her run but was clearly restricted before retiring while leading 6-1-3-1.
"I am very happy with this week," said Muguruza, 25.
"It's a great feeling to come back to defend his title – it's never easy."
This is the first title won by Grand Slam champion Muguruza twice since his victory in Mexico last year.
Azarenka had played her last singles final in April 2016, winning both Indian Wells and Miami in less than two weeks before announcing her pregnancy later that year and giving birth to her son Leo in December.
She returned to competitive sport the following summer, but was involved in a battle for the custody of her son, which had repercussions on his tennis.
Keys wins his first title on clay
Earlier, Madison Keys beat Caroline Wozniacki in sets to win the Charleston Open – his first title on clay.
The 24-year-old American won 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, beating 54 winners against fifth-seeded Danish Wozniacki, the 2011 champion.
This is a fourth career title for Keys and its first since 2017.
The eighth-seeded defeated three Grand Slam champions – Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens and Jelena Ostapenko – on their way to victory, as well as reigning Olympic champion Monica Puig.
Wozniacki, who was in his third Charleston final after being a finalist in 2009, said Keys was "too good".
The world number 18 is the first American winner of the tournament since Stephens three years ago.
