The capital of Alabama launches free Wi-Fi in the central part of downtown.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that this is one of many planned upgrades that use technology. Other plans require street cameras and a mobile phone app designed to help people find parking.

Also planned: an expanded optical fiber network; and 22,000 new light emitting diode lamps, commonly referred to as LED lamps.

The newspaper reports that this is part of a broader effort to create what is called a "Smart City Living Lab" in the heart of the city.
