More and more households in UW openly defecate despite the success of Nandom

Wa, June 9, GNA – The Upper West Regional
An Open Defecation Free (ODF) leaderboard was launched in Wa with Nandom
District achieving ODF status at district level, but several hundred households
still practicing open defecation in the area.

The ranking of the ODF league was unveiled on
theme: "Achieving open defecation at the district level, the role of
MMDA leadership ".

The Regional Minister for the Upper West (UW), Dr.
Hafiz Bin-Salih, congratulated the chiefs and inhabitants of Nandom and the Nandom
District Assembly to achieve district level ODF status.

Nandom has made the region proud to have realized
the remarkable success of being the first district of the country to achieve ODF status
status, which implies that all households in the district have their own toilets
facilities and no one vented to the outdoors.

The Assembly is developing a sustainable development plan to maintain this enviable
success. "And let me add that reaching the ODF status at the district level is only the

position, registered only five ODF summer communities from its 86 communities
respectively.

Alhaji Municipal General Manager
Issahasku Tahiru Moomin, explained that Wa was the gateway where many people
go in and out, making defecation in the open a common practice.

He appealed to the environmental municipality
Health workers become more engaged in the fight against the Open
Defecation.

He also urged residents to change
and adopt community-led total sanitation to help harmonize
work of Environmental Health Officers.
