Wa, June 9, GNA – The Upper West Regional
An Open Defecation Free (ODF) leaderboard was launched in Wa with Nandom
District achieving ODF status at district level, but several hundred households
still practicing open defecation in the area.
The ranking of the ODF league was unveiled on
theme: "Achieving open defecation at the district level, the role of
MMDA leadership ".
The Regional Minister for the Upper West (UW), Dr.
Hafiz Bin-Salih, congratulated the chiefs and inhabitants of Nandom and the Nandom
District Assembly to achieve district level ODF status.
Nandom has made the region proud to have realized
the remarkable success of being the first district of the country to achieve ODF status
status, which implies that all households in the district have their own toilets
facilities and no one vented to the outdoors.
"I hope the district of Nandom
The Assembly is developing a sustainable development plan to maintain this enviable
success. "And let me add that reaching the ODF status at the district level is only the

The ODF ranking ranks all 11
Municipal and District Assemblies in their efforts to make
their ODF districts and municipalities to foster competition in health between

Regional Department of Environmental Health and Sanitation has indicated that Nandom
The district ranked first with 88 out of 88 communities that had been
confirmed ODF.
The district director of Nandom, Mr.
Theddeus Aasoglenang said that success had been achieved through the strict application of
Regulations and public commitment to end open defecation in the district.
The district of Lawra has the second position, which counted 69 ODF communities representing 75 percent on
of 94 communities followed by Wa West with
156 FDAL representing 72%
out of a total of 227 communities.
In the district of Daffiama / Bussie / Issa, on
Of the 105 communities, 75 communities were declared ODF, representing 69%
in the district of Nadowli-Kaleo, 103 ODF communities out of 141
communities.
In the district of Lambussie, 37 communities
had been declared ODF in 58 communities; 31 communities in Sissala
West had also been confirmed ODF on the 55 communities.
The municipality of Jirapa has moved from 10th position
from the table of the second edition to the 8th position with 37 communities
ODF confirmed on 116 communities.
Out of
138 communities in Wa East District, 48 communities had been
FDAL, while in East Sissala district, 10 communities recognized
ODF out of 59 communities.
Wa Municipal who occupied the last
position, registered only five ODF summer communities from its 86 communities
respectively.
Alhaji Municipal General Manager
Issahasku Tahiru Moomin, explained that Wa was the gateway where many people
go in and out, making defecation in the open a common practice.
He appealed to the environmental municipality
Health workers become more engaged in the fight against the Open
Defecation.
He also urged residents to change
and adopt community-led total sanitation to help harmonize
work of Environmental Health Officers.
