(CNN) – According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people living in urban areas die at a higher rate than people in rural areas of the United States.
This finding reverses the trend of most of the last decade, which has seen an increase in drug overdose deaths in rural areas of the country.
The conclusion is in a new badysis of the CDC.
The rate of overdose deaths in rural areas exceeded the rate of overdose deaths in urban areas from 2007 to 2015, but this trend reversed in 2016 and 2017.
The study found that overdose deaths in urban counties were more attributed to heroin, cocaine and synthetic opioids in 2017.
Overdose deaths in rural counties were more related to prescription opioids such as morphine and oxycodone.
Researchers said that there had been nearly 69,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States last year, of which 47,590 were opioid-related.
