Another 10 workers will be employed at the Trelawny Department of Health's vector control unit as the ministry intensifies its efforts to destroy mosquito breeding sites in the parish.

"We are developing temporary work staff," said Health Minister Christopher Tufton, following a recent meeting with Falmouth Hospital staff and other stakeholders , to discuss vector control measures.

"We will go from 40 to 50 HOPE (Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment) programs, as well as Ministry of Health staff (Vector Support Program), which will work alongside the 10 permanent workers. They will be deployed in critical communities, like Albert Town, where there are a large number of Aedes aegypti breeding sites, "he said.

The additional workers, he added, "will map city centers to educate locals", in order to get them to participate in the eradication of mosquito breeding sites.

He said that January had been active in mosquito breeding and that, as a result, Trelawny's health department was redoubling its efforts to control the vectors.
