More women contracting HIV / AIDS than men in Ghana

About 65 percent of Ghana's population living with HIV / AIDS is female, the Ghana AIDS Commission said.

This is in line with national and subnational HIV and AIDS estimates and projections for 2017.

The report adds that the population of the country affected by HIV / AIDS is currently 320,992 in 2019.

Providing an additional breakdown of the numbers, the report indicates that 212 out of 169 women living with HIV / AIDS in Ghana are women.

At the same time, 108,309 are men aged 15 to 49 years.

The number of men with a new infection was 5,670, compared to 9,731 in women.

In addition, annual deaths in 2019 were 4,361 for men and 4,419 for women.

According to the report, the number of people living with HIV / AIDS has increased by more than 7,000 since 2017.

Two years ago, the country had 313,063 people living with HIV / AIDS, but that number rose to 320,992 in 2019.

At the same time, the regions of Greater Accra and Ashanti have the highest number of people living with HIV, according to the report.

However, the regions of the Far West and East have the lowest number of people living with the virus.
