One of the oldest known mosques in the world, built about 1,200 years ago, was discovered by archaeologists in the Negev desert in Israel. YEN.com.gh includes.

The BBC reports that remains dating back to the 7th or 8th century were found in the Bedouin town of Rahat.

The Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) said the mosque had been discovered during construction work in the area.

According to IAA, it is the first known mosque of this period in the region, comparable to the age of those found in Mecca and Jerusalem.

Excavation directors Jon Seligman and Shahar Zur said the mosque would be"a rare find all over the world."

The researchers believe that the congregation of the mosque was probably made up of local farmers.

The building was open-air, rectangular in shape and had a "Mihrab" – or a prayer niche – facing south towards Mecca, the holiest city of Islam.

"These features are proof of why this building was used several hundred years ago" said Seligman.

It is one of the first mosques built after the arrival of Islam in present-day Israel, when the Arabs conquered the province of the Byzantine era in 636 , according to Gideon Avni, expert in the history of Islam.

"The discovery of the village and the surrounding mosque is an important contribution to the study of the history of the country during this turbulent period", he said.
