Kevin De Bruyne's path to becoming one of the best footballers in the world could have been so different without the stubbornness of Jose Mourinho. What a surprise.
In a play for the Players' Tribune, the Manchester City playmaker revealed the fact that his Portuguese coach had blocked a move from Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund to the Belgian at the time.
Referring to his debut at Chelsea, the 27-year-old said:
The truth is that I have only spoken to him twice. The plan was still for me to go on loan a bit. So I went to Werder Bremen in 2012 and this season went very well. When I returned to Chelsea next summer, some German clubs wanted me to sign.
Klopp wanted me to come to Borussia Dortmund and they played the kind of football that I like. So I thought maybe Chelsea would let me go.
But then Mourinho sent me a text message: "You stay. I want you to be part of this team.
The relationship finally began to deteriorate, as often happens with Mourinho, and although we have already joined the cracks of the unhappy marriage, De Bruyne tells us more about the circumstances that led to his exit from the London club.
Mourinho himself was questioned about the release of De Bruyne at that time and published an overwhelming response.
"With De Bruyne, if a player knocks on your door and cries every day he wants to leave, you have to make a decision," said Mourinho. "He was not ready to compete. It was a thwarted kid, his training was very bad.
De Bruyne confirmed that the former manager was ruthless in his approach during the waiver with the midfielder.
José called me in his office in December and it was probably the second big moment that changed my life. He had some papers in front of him and he said, "Help. Zero objective. Ten times.
It took me a minute to understand what he was doing. Then he started reading the statistics of the other attacking attackers – Willian, Oscar, Mata, Schürrle. And it's like – five goals, 10 badists, whatever. Jose was sort of waiting for me to say something, and finally I said, "But … some of those guys played 15, 20 games. I only played three. So, it's going to be different, right?
It was so strange. We talked a bit about my return on loan. And as Mata was also out of the way at that time, then Jose said, "Well, you know, if Mata leaves, you'll be the fifth choice instead of sixth." I was completely honest. I feel that the club does not really want me here. I want to play football. I would rather you sell me.
It turned out that De Bruyne's career was not bad. And maybe the hard love of Mourinho marked the career of the Belgian to its current peaks. To let slip such mercurial talent in your fingers seems ridiculously foolish however, no matter how you look at it.
