• Sammy Gyamfi opposed the government’s decision to buy a new jet
• Urgent questions were tabled to determine the cost of Akufo-Addo overseas travel
• But the government declares that the current presidential jet is not suitable for its use
National Democratic Congress chief communications officer Sammy Gyamfi opposed the government’s decision to purchase a new presidential jet.
Presidential Communications Director Eugene Arhin told reporters on September 27, 2021 that Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul had already started the process for Ghana to procure the new jet.
Responding to the development on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Sammy Gyamfi described the move as an insult to the sensitivity and plight of Ghanaians.
“I strongly submit that the decision of the government led by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia nuclear power plant to purchase a new presidential plane is a misplaced priority and will be a waste of public money if allowed. Just thinking about it right now is insensitive to the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian and an insult to our sensitivity, ”Sammy Gyamfi said on the show on October 3, 2021.
Already, some members of the 8th Parliament minority caucus have tabled urgent questions calling for full disclosure of President Akufo-Addo’s international travel costs.
North Tongu MP Samual Okudzeto Ablakwa has said on numerous occasions that the current presidential jet, the Falcon, is efficient enough for the president’s travel instead of the charter flights that are paid for by the state.
Meanwhile, the government, for its part, has justified that the current presidential jet was not sufficiently suited for its use, hence its decision to go ahead and buy a new one.
