Five cases of cholera have been confirmed in Mozambique following the cyclone that ravaged the country, killing at least 468 people, a public health official said Wednesday.

Hurricane Idai shot down Mozambique on March 15, causing hurricane force winds and torrential rains that flooded much of the country's center before touching eastern Zimbabwe and Malawi.

"We have five cases of cholera that have been confirmed.It is in Beira and the surrounding area," health official Ussein Isse told reporters, referring to the city that was the more affected by the cyclone.

UN Chief of Humanitarian Aid Mark Lowbad has called for humanitarian aid of $ 282 million (250 million euros) over the next three months in Mozambique.

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) reported that 3,125 square kilometers of land had been flooded.
