Mozambique reports up to 271 cases of cholera in a city affected by the cyclone

The Mozambican authorities say the number of cholera cases among cyclone survivors has increased to 271.

The Portuguese news agency Lusa quotes the national director of health, Ussein Isse, who had initially declared the epidemic of acute diarrhea on Wednesday, with only five cases.

The report says that to date, no deaths related to cholera have been confirmed.

Cases have been discovered in the port city of Beira, whose half-million inhabitants, especially those from overcrowded poor neighborhoods, are particularly vulnerable.

Doctors Without Borders has already announced some 200 cases of probable cholera a day in the city, where rescuers are in a hurry to repair the damaged water supply system and provide additional medical badistance.

The World Health Organization has announced that some 900,000 doses of cholera vaccine will arrive Monday.
