James Oppong-Boanuh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), has called for harsh penalties for people who exercise all kinds of surveillance in the country to discourage them.

Speaking during the dialogue that took place yesterday at Peduase Lodge, near Aburi, in the east of the country, on the vigilantism organized by the Peace Council of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) , the new ruling Patriotic Party (NPP) and other stakeholders, said the vice president IGP encouraged for too long because the laws supposed to deal with the situation were indulgent.

He said that different types of vigilance are practiced in Ghana.

In addition to political and economic vigils, he added that there are religious vigils in addition to bodyguards who are employed by certain groups and individuals to serve their parish interests.

The Special Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs is currently studying the 2019 Vigilance and Related Offenses Bill. Most Ghanaians expect the bill to be approved because it is currently undergoing an emergency certificate.

He described people moving from one hotel to another looking for adulterous partners and fornicators as "religious" militias and described the land guards as economic militias.

The police chief added that the ground guards would stop at nothing to carry out their mission and that their activities posed a threat to peace in the country.

The Deputy IGP suggested that the economic militia who engage in ground guard during the day also engage in night flight operations, adding that they would eventually be used as macho men during election periods.

The Justice Emile Short commission, charged by President Akufo-Addo to investigate the violence that characterized the partial election in Ayawaso West Wuogon, has since presented its report.
