Although the majority in Parliament accepted the change of name bill, the minority abstained.
The bill was pbaded by the majority while the minority apologized.
Simon Diedong Dombo was a member of the United Party (UP) tradition, which gave birth to the new Patriotic Party (NPP) in power.
A renowned politician, he was also deputy and head of parliament during the first Republic of Ghana.
He was also king – as Douri-Na, he was reputed to be the first educated chief of the upper region of Ghana.
Simon Diedong Dombo was Minister of Health and then Minister of the Interior in the Busia government.

He was also one of the founders of the Northern People's Party, which later merged with the United States Party.
