The contentious bill to criminalize LGBTQ + and its activities in Ghana will be tabled today, Monday August 2, 2022 for the first time in Parliament.
In recent weeks, the bill has made waves after parts of the document were released on the Internet.
Especially on social media, Ghanaians expressed different opinions with Ningo Prampram MP the Hon. Sam George takes on a former British legislative body Seb Dance.
Private member’s legislation titled “Ghana Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021” when passed, will see violators of its regulations jail for up to 10 years.
Ahead of the bill’s first appearance in parliament today, Tamale Central Constituency MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed revealed that some members of the House were against it.
“Nana Aba, I can tell you that there are ministers who are trying to convince MPs to withdraw from the bill.
“Among the 275 deputies, there is no one on the fence regarding the bill. There is no neutrality. it is either you are for or against, ”said the deputy in an interview with Starr FM.
Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has said in a proposal that he would prefer the vote to be made public to expose MPs who are members of the LGBT + community.
“… even if it is about voting, we have to vote publicly on who is LGBT and who is not,” said the Tamale Central MP.
In addition to the eight MPs pushing for the passage of the LGBT + bill, President Alban Bagbin has declared his support for the passage of the bill.
