The Department of Communications, through the National Cybersecurity Center, is organizing a three-day retreat for members of Parliament's Special Committee on Communications.

The planned exercise from June 1 to June 3, 2019 is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the committee's legislators in the field of cybersecurity and at reviewing the draft legislation on cybersecurity – Cybersecurity Bill and the draft law on cybersecurity. interception, as well as the revised national cybersecurity policy and strategy.

Legislation aims to create a cybersecurity authority, providing a legal framework for effectively conducting e-business activities in the public interest and protecting the country's critical national information infrastructure.

The retreat also aims to review the revised National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy, which provides policy guidance on cybersecurity in the country to reflect current trends in cybersecurity and cybercrime.

Since its inception, the center has facilitated many capacity-building and awareness-raising activities focused on securing a safer cyberecosystem in Ghana. Among these activities, the National Cybersecurity Awareness Program (NCSAP), called Safer Campaign in Ghana, aims to raise public awareness of four areas of intervention to address the threat of cybercrime and to improve cybersecurity preparation in Ghana.

Ghana has ratified two international conventions, namely: the Malabo Convention (African Union Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection) and the Budapest Convention (Convention on Cybercrime) recognizing the need for international cooperation to fight cybercrime and improve cybersecurity from global best practices.

Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is expected to present current developments and policy directions on cybersecurity in Ghana during the retreat, which will include 36 participants including members of the Parliamentary Special Committee on Communication , Ministry of Communications officials and members of the Legislative Drafting Division of the Attorney General's Office.
