The Western regional chapter of telecommunications giant MTN Ghana donated 514 liters of blood to three major hospitals in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis in the western region.
This would help reduce the blood deficit by 40% in the country, according to the National Blood Bank.
Ghana's national blood services estimated the population's blood needs to be 270,000 units of blood, but only 160,000 units of blood are collected, leaving a 40% deficit in the country. That's why MTN donated blood to various hospitals every Valentine's Day.
Mohammed Tiyuniba Yakubu, Regional Director of Western and Central for MTN, said the blood donation to the three hospitals of Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis was crucial, their research showing that a majority of residents of the region frequent these challenged hospitals with insufficient blood at their blood bank.
The annual Valentine's Day blood donation was launched about eight years ago to save the lives of people who need blood. He has since recorded comforting stories of people whose lives were saved through exercise.
"One of the stories that affected me most was that of a client whose baby was critically ill and who needed a blood transfusion urgently." The baby was saved at the moment of death. Can you imagine what would have happened if they had no more blood?
"Many clients told us that their families needed blood transfusions, which were saved for life, thanks to this initiative," he added.
On just over 100 liters of blood recorded in the first year of 2011, MTN Ghana's "Save a Life" campaign was a resounding success: on Thursday, February 14, 2019, they were able to collect 4449 liters of blood from 19 bleeding centers. set up in the ten regions of Ghana; a little above 3,500 estimated for the day.
Taking into account the pints of blood collected, the Brong Ahafo area is surmounted by 984 pints, followed by the North region with 669, the West region 514, the Upper East region 418, the Greater area. Accra 412, Ashanti Region 404, Central Region 350, Upper West 311 and East. region 235 with the Volta region being the smallest with 152 pints.
The hospitals that benefited from the 514 pints collected in the western region are Effiankwanta Regional Hospital, Essikado Hospital and Nagel SDA Hospital.
