In this week's episode of MTN's Heroes of Change 2019, the MTN Foundation showcases the work of Daniel Owusu Asiamah, a missionary whose pbadion for providing training and practical skills to the neediest people of society has had an impact over 1,000 lives.
The education and education of Daniel Owusu Asiamah was so difficult from the beginning that without the benevolence of others he would not be what he is today. This led the man to personally fund a free education mission of the poorest in society.
In the community of Whindo, Takoradi, one can easily find the Institute of Vocational Training in Africa (OAVI), which trains JHS graduates who are unable to continue their studies because of poverty at home or death of their parents.
Since 2008, OAVI has trained and continues to train young people in professional disciplines such as fashion design, food and nutrition, hairdressing and beauty, as well as architectural design as main subjects. In addition, the school teaches English, mathematics, entrepreneurship and basic computer science at school.
Totally free education
In addition to being a tuition-free institute, the school offers a free daily bus service for students and workers, as well as a discounted shop in which students purchase products. at the cost that they come from wholesale stores without any benefit.
"I have limited financial support for the 'poorest of the poor', especially those who have lost both parents. At graduation, we give the largest number of students "start-up tools" such as sewing machines, hair dryers, ovens and gas cylinders, as well as money to start something. thing, "says Asiamah.
Motivation
When asked why he was doing it at such a cost, Mr. Asiamah explained that his conviction in the Bible, his past, and his interest in the development of mother Ghana were the three cardinal reasons.
"As a missionary and preacher, I see Jesus in the gospels at the service of the poor, at all times. I am the only child of my mother. I have never seen my dad because he died while I was still baby. I have witnessed the difficulties that my mother (single mother) went through before getting me to study, that is to say college.
The rest of my education was made possible by the kindness of people of good will. This included the opportunity to study in one of the most prestigious training schools in Hawaii, USA, with less than 100% scholarships. So I made a commitment to make all the sacrifices necessary to help others when life will smile, "he notes.
Funding
As a missionary, Mr. Asiamah's personal income is what supports the school. In addition, during his travels, some well-meaning Christians give him cash donations to support his ministry and on graduation days, others make voluntary contributions.
Major achievements
In the last decade, 945 young people, including foreigners, have graduated. Currently, more than 95% work happily in various workplaces in Ghana, including hotels, restaurants, district bademblies, the army and the Ghana police. Others have their own hair salon and their own sewing center.
Again, at least 12 adults are also paid monthly to take care of their family. The school campus is considered one of the best in the Sekondi / Takoradi metropolis for vocational schools. The clbadrooms are clean and spacious. As far as he knows, OAVI is the only free vocational school in the Western Region where we also provide all the tools necessary for their practical training.
challenges
The biggest challenge has always been finance. With more financial support, he says that the school will be able to expand, allowing to accept more and get more degrees.
"We had to turn down a number of qualified candidates due to lack of space. Our school bus is out of order and is now at the mechanic's, forcing many of our students to walk several kilometers a day to school. We are so in need of a school bus. Every year, we lose no less than 10 female students because of unwanted pregnancies, even though we try as much as possible to teach them and preach them from the Bible, "he says.
Future plans
Over the next five years, he intends to expand his system to 500 candidates at a time. In the long term, he plans to add more courses and workers and make OAVI a degree-granting institute.
