Ashanti’s Regional Department of Motor Traffic and Transportation (MTTD) has arrested around 220 drivers of tricycles and motorcycles in the past two days.

The special operation emanated from a directive from the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), following endemic accidents involving these means of transport on the roads of the metropolis.

It is estimated that for four traffic accident cases treated at the Accidents and Emergencies Unit of Komfo Anokye University Hospital, three of them included either a tricycle or a motorcycle.

Superintendent Emmanuel Adu Boahen, regional commander of MTTD, informed the Ghanaian News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, said the offenses against the riders were related to overloading, driving without a helmet or license and being driving between the tracks.

They were gathered in the municipalities of Greater Kumasi, including Asokore-Mampong, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Suame, Asokwa, Old Tafo and some suburbs of the metropolis of Kumasi.

“We are treating these culprits so that they can be brought to justice,” he said, noting that the police had impounded all these tricycles and motorcycles without a valid license.

In a recent statement, REGSEC expressed concern over “the blatant manner in which drivers flout traffic rules with impunity, resulting in deaths and injuries among innocent citizens”.

“Not only are the activities of the drivers of these tricycles on our roads and highways a nuisance to other road users, they also pose several risks.

“They drive recklessly and engage in dangerous and unjustified crossings of other road users,” the statement said.
