Robert Mueller is clearly uncomfortable to be chosen as an additional actor in the drama of someone else. But that is where it is today.
During the first hour of the hearing, Democratic lawmakers attempted to have Mueller highlight and develop sections of his report showing that President Trump expresses his concern, anger or frustration about the issue. As might be expected, Republicans accused Mueller and his team of going beyond his legal mandate and drawing erroneous conclusions about the motives and actions of the Trump campaigners.
Both parties, in part because each representative is limited to 5 minutes each, rushed to score points, asking Mueller quick-response questions that he is clearly hesitant (and perhaps even incapable) of respond at full speed. The overall effect is that Mueller seems confused by the flow of questions.
Today's proceedings are a long way from the 1974 Watergate hearings, which took place at a slower pace, and revealed much basic information about the range and magnitude of public misconduct first time. Today, on the other hand, the conversation is about a dense relationship, familiar to all lawmakers, but known in vague terms by the public.
It is ironic that the man who directed and directed the investigation was reduced to a taciturn, slightly puzzled secondary character at a hearing on his own work.
