Houston Department of Health officials confirmed seven mumps cases at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Houston.
The seven individuals are adult inmates who were detained during their infectious period. There is no indication that the disease has been transmitted to anyone outside the institution.
"Since these people were isolated inside the facility during the time they were infectious, we do not expect these cases to pose a threat to the community," said Dr. David Persse, local health authority and director. Houston Hospital Medical Center.
Mumps is a contagious disease that can be prevented by a virus and can be prevented by a vaccine. It usually begins with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite, followed by swelling of the salivary glands.

People who have symptoms of mumps or other highly contagious disease should immediately contact their doctor. Most people cure mumps without serious complications.

Mumps can be prevented with two doses of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR). Children should receive the first dose between 12 and 15 months and the second dose between 4 and 6 years. Two doses of vaccine are 97% effective.
The CDC considers that people who have received two doses of MMR vaccine as children according to the US vaccination schedule are protected for life.
"Getting your children vaccinated is not just about protection, it's about protecting your entire family and community," said Dr. Persse.
