President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to the fight against corruption, saying his government’s priority is to ensure that the country is rid of the vice.
In a meeting with the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition at Jubilee House, Accra, he said his administration’s fight against corruption has not faltered and that he remains steadfast in this path to meet hopes and growing aspirations of Ghanaians for socio-economic transformation. .
The president said his government has invested more resources in state anti-corruption agencies than any other administration in the country’s history and will ensure that these investments are not wasted.
He said it was notorious that his administration, since 2017, had increased resource allocations to anti-corruption institutions such as parliament, judiciary, police, EOCO and CHRAJ, among others.
“It is unfortunate that the perception is that government commitment weakens especially when two or three facts are taken into account.”
“I don’t think a government has mobilized resources to allow state anti-corruption agencies to function as effectively as this government has done. It’s a matter of record,” he said. -he declares.
President Akufo-Addo noted that without such investments in anti-corruption institutions, the thorny issue of fighting corruption would have been in vain.
“If the institutions of the republic which are supposed to lead the fight are not able to do so, all the talk about the fight against corruption remains meaningless,” he argued, adding that the annual increases in allocations budgets for anti-corruption institutions were a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to fighting corruption.
The president was unhappy with the politicization of alleged corruption issues, but said he would continue to heed concerns and suggestions about it to step up the fight against the canker.
Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition Chairman Nana Osei Bonsu, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, expressed concern about the scourge of corruption on Ghana’s finances and urged the government to step up the momentum to fight against embezzlement.
He urged the government to quickly appoint a permanent auditor general to step up the fight against the threat, to which the president responded that the process for this is currently underway and will soon be concluded.
