In Myanmar, two vaccine-derived circulating type-1 polioviruses (cVDPV1) were reported this week in Papun district, Kayin province, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Neighboring countries have been informed of the presence of confirmed mousepox virus and poliovirus surveillance is being strengthened throughout the region. Myanmar had already succeeded in stopping an outbreak of cVDPV2 in 2015.

The routine immunization coverage of Myanmar is high, estimated at 89% nationally for bivalent OPV.

The Ministry of Health and local health authorities have launched an in-depth investigation and Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners are supporting, if necessary. A comprehensive epidemiological and virological field survey is under way, including the source and origin of isolated viruses; active surveillance is being strengthened; the immunity levels of sub-national populations are being badyzed; and the intervention in case of epidemic is being planned.

In addition, five other cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) were reported (4 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan). This brings to 56 the total number of cases of WPV1 this year. Of a total of 2018, 33 cases were reported.

Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Angola have all reported circulating cases of vaccine-derived type 2 poliovirus (cVDPV2).
