#MyClimateQuestions: experts and youth leaders respond – live | Environment

Australian politicians have sometimes been very constructive and destructive in their response to climate change.

For example, in 2001, the Australian government pbaded laws requiring more renewable energy in our system. This level, called the renewable energy target, was increased in 2009. As a result, the amount of renewable energy will rise from 9% in 2001 to around 33% in 2020.

In 2012, the government pbaded laws encouraging polluters to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. These laws were very effective and our emissions began to decline, but in 2014, they were defeated and their emissions have increased since.

In order to avoid dangerous climate change, almost every country in the world has joined the Paris Agreement. We are too, but experts say our target is not strong enough and worse, even government experts say we will not even achieve our goals.

Australia has done quite a few things in the past, but in my opinion, our government has not yet a real plan to deal with the climate challenge.
