Prez Akufo-Addo’s decision to reimburse the salary increase he received from January of the year has drawn mixed reactions for Ghana.

After the revelation of the presidency, they reimburse money up to 237,000 Ghc to return to the state.

According to the director of communications, Eugene Arhin, the sums go to the Pensions and Salaries account of the Department of the Comptroller and the General Accountant.

But senior lobbyist FixTheCountry Oliver Barker-Vormawor says it’s just a publicity stunt.

He explained that “when you look at the reimbursement context … the reason people see it as a public relations stunt is similar to the immoral pay increases because of the coup in Guinea.”

“Nothing positive to celebrate in fact, politicians are going to pay themselves illegal immoral wages; when they grab their pants, they come back,” he told BBC Pidgin.

Communications director Eugene Arhin, announcing the payback, said Prez Akufo-Addo made his decision around May of the year.

He explains that de Prez announced the salary freeze on the salary increase on himself den other members of the executive with the aim of COVID-19 den of challenges countries are facing.

According to Eugene Arhin, “after de Prez received a salary that he accumulated from January to August of the year, he said he was not implementing a directive.”

In addition to reimbursement, Prez Akufo-Addo leads the vice president, ministers, deputies and members of the executive to reimburse any salary increases they are not entitled to between January and August of the year.

According to Mr. Barker-Vormawor, despite complaints from protests, politicians do not back down on bad things like paying illegal wages.

Instead, they will talk, the protesters say ‘go to court; knowing full well that the court will cover the wrongdoing of these.

In July of the year, the First Lady of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, repays the amounts she received as an allowance from 2017 to 2021 after Ghanaians called on the government.

The second lady is also taking similar action by repaying the amounts she receives as backdated salary from 2017 to 2021.
