NASA discovered with TESS Saturn hot – Science

Less than a year after launching the TESS space telescope, NASA has announced the discovery of a "hot saturn" 50 billion years old.

The Satellite Exploration Satellite In Transit (TESS) began its search for planets external to the gravitational influence of the Sun in April 2018. Information on the periodic darkening of the stars studied now has led to the discovery of an exoplanet until then unknown.

The "hot Saturn"

The exoplanet is known as TOI 197.01 – TOI means "object of interest TESS". Scientists also call it "hot Saturn" because the size of the planets is approximately the same. However, the TOI 197.01 is much hotter. The high surface temperature of the exoplanet is due to its proximity to its star, which it can orbit completely in just 14 days.

Valuable data via TESS

By badyzing the data collected by TESS, researchers get valuable information about solar systems. "This is the first bucket of water coming from a fire hose containing the data we will get from TESS," said Steve Kawaler, co-author of the TESS. study.

Two years after the beginning of the mission, in April 2020, TESS would have already examined 85% of the sky. We will see if the successor of the Kepler space telescope can still contribute to the discovery of other exoplanets.
