Natalie Portman took the stage at Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con with the mighty Mjolnir hammer in hand. Yes, Jane Foster of Portman will become Thor in Taika Waititi's upcoming film "Thor: Love and Thunder".
The astrophysicist Foster became the goddess of thunder in the extraordinary "Thor" series of comic writer Jason Aaron starting in 2014. Foster was dying of cancer but she was worthy of Mjolnir when Thor himself suddenly became unworthy – he would continue to call the Odinson and ride on a strange giant goat while Foster's Thor was fighting for justice. The only problem was that when she became Thor, the transformation would mean that every time Foster's progress with his chemotherapy would fade away. Being a superhero, being Thor, was the right thing to do for Foster – but it was literally killing her. Which made her all the more heroic and therefore even more worthy of brandishing Mjolnir.
Who knows how much Aaron's story will be part of the Waititi movie? Chris Hemsworth will be back as a god of thunder – will he lose his powers? Will it only become Odinson? Who knows? In "Avengers: Endgame", he made Valkyrie Tessa Thompson, the new lord of Asgard, in his place, because he did not feel up to it.
"Thor: Love and Thunder" opens on November 5, 2021.
