Accra, March 29, GNA –
The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) congratulated the Parliament for
its efforts to pbad the Right to Information Bill (RTI).
The Commission has said
was pleased that the bill was finally adopted after two decades and,
congratulated the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic for the
Law.
A press release signed
Joyce Affutu, Director of Public Affairs, NCCE, with a copy to the Secretariat of the
Ghana News Agency, congratulated all civil society organizations and the media for
their strategic role in advocating for the pbadage of the bill.
The statement quoted
Article 21 (1) (f) of Ghana's 1992 Constitution states that "all
persons have the right to information subject to such qualifications and
necessary laws in a democratic society.
Ms. Affutu said that
The NCCE was of the view that the adoption of the ITR Act would further contribute to
strengthen the public responsibility and responsiveness of citizens to
national concern while enhancing transparency as a characteristic of true democracy.
She noted that the
NCCE would continue to engage in the fight against corruption, the rule of law and
Accountability Programs (PFRA) and encouraged Ghanaians to take full ownership
take advantage of the law to collectively fight corruption in Ghana and demand
the liability of the bondholders.
"We urge Parliament to
accelerate the transition from the legislative instrument to the RTI Act to make it
functional, "she added.
