The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) congratulated Parliament for its efforts to pbad the Right to Information Bill (RTI).
The Commission was pleased that the bill was finally adopted after two decades and therefore congratulated the seventh legislature of the Fourth Republic for the law.
In a press release signed by Ms. Joyce Affutu, NCCE Director of Public Affairs, with a copy to the Ghana News Agency, all civil society organizations and the media were commended for their strategic advocacy role in favor of the adoption of the bill.
The statement cited Article 21 (1) (f) of Ghana's 1992 Constitution, which states that "Everyone has the right to information subject to the necessary qualifications and legislation in a democratic society.
Ms. Affutu stated that the CNCE was of the opinion that the adoption of the RTI Bill would enhance public accountability and sensitivity of citizens to issues of national interest while enhancing transparency as a characteristic of true democracy.
She said the CNCE would continue to engage in anti-corruption, rule of law and accountability (PFRA) programs and encouraged Ghanaians to take full advantage of the law to collectively fight corruption in the country. Ghana and hold those responsible to account. "We urge Parliament to speed up the adoption of the legislative instrument in the RTI Act in order to make it functional," she added.
