The director of the southern Builsa district of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Alhaji Alhassan Bukari, urged young people in the region to play a watchdog role by exposing suspicious people.
The District Director launched the appeal during a workshop day organized by the Commission on the theme; “Forum of young activists on violent extremism” in Fumbisi on Saturday.
He told youth groups from different communities in the district that they had a major role to play in complementing the efforts of various security agencies in maintaining law and order.
He also took the opportunity to educate young people not to be recruited by specific individuals, foreigners, to provoke violent extremism and radicalism.
Alhaji Bukari said the program, funded by the European Union, aims to instill a sense of patriotism among young people to help fight transnational organized crime and promote human rights and the rule of law.
He added that the project which is part of the broader objective of Electoral Violence Prevention and Security in the Border Regions of Northern Ghana (NORPREVSEC), targeting the young activist, further aims to provide young people with relevant information on violent extremism. and radicalism.
NCCE’s Acting Regional Director for the Upper East, Mr. Victor Nuworkpor, showed videos of violence in some neighboring countries, where young people have been recruited to perpetuate violence, wreak havoc and destroy property.
While calling on women to be ambassadors for peace by calling on their husbands and sons to renounce acts of violence, he also urged young people to be patriots, law-abiding and respect the rights of others, and to also denounce foreigners who appear suspicious. to legal agencies.
The Catholic parish priest responsible for the region, Reverend Ernest Otchere, stressed the need for an equal distribution of resources and to tolerate and integrate with each other for peaceful coexistence.
District Police Commander ASP Kwesi Amankwa explained to participants about “preventing violent extremism in Ghana” and explained to participants some of the tactics used by terrorists to attack communities.
