Isaac Owusu Bempah and his troubled co-defendants to appear in court on September 20
• NDC lawyer advised on bail for Isaac Owusu Bempah
• The preacher was arrested a week ago but was released on bail by a High Court last Wednesday
• He must appear before the Circuit Court which refused him release on bail on September 20
Lawyer Gary Nimako of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, revealed that a fellow lawyer from the opposition Democratic National Congress, NDC, had provided ideas on how to defend Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah.
Owusu Bempah, founder and chief pastor of Glorious Power Ministries International, and three others appear in Accra circuit court for threatening to harm former fetish priestess Nana Agradaa.
Asked by Neat FM host last Thursday about an appeal by NDC lawyer Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo for the attorney general to drop the case against Owusu Bempah, Nimako responded.
“Tameklo is a truthful person, his only downside is the (political) propaganda he refuses to stop. He called me personally when this issue arose and we discussed legal strategies and deepened the law (when the Circuit Court denied Bempah bail) and then I said we were going to go to the High Court, ”revealed Nimako.
Asked about the next step in the case, which will resume on Monday, September 20 in the Accra Circuit Court, Nimako said: “We just didn’t go, they dragged us there and said we weren’t there. ‘they were going to pursue them. It is the Attorney General who will initiate proceedings, so if he enters into a nolle prosequi, the case is closed.
He cautioned those seeking to label the case as a political problem with the NPP pursuing one of their staunch supporters, stressing that if the government was complicit in the case, it would not have been advocating for Owusu Bempah.
“This is why we ask Tameklo to continue to plead for us, to plead for us that the case be closed. These rumors of government involvement only worsen the problem without any foundation or facts, ”he added.
“If the government was complicit, I will not represent Owusu Bempah, the government is not involved in any way.”
Owusu Bempah was arrested a week ago on his church premises for an incident in which he threatened a former fetish priestess, Nana Agradaa.
Viral videos showed Owusu Bempah in a car with armed assistants in front of Agradaa’s residence. Bempah and three junior pastors face, among others, charges of threat of harm and threat of death.
He was denied bail by a circuit court on Monday before his lawyers went to the High Court where he was granted a bond of 200,000 Ghanaian cedis.
