Ghanaian economist and columnist Isaac ‘Opeele’ Boateng said Members of Parliament (MPs) belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are to be congratulated for voting overwhelmingly for Hawa Koomson.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister-designate Hawa Koomson obtained approval by a majority vote on the house floor after reports from the Nominations Committee indicated she was unfit for the employment.

However, it obtained the highest number of votes, collecting 161 votes out of 265 total votes, or 60.75% of the total votes cast.

I am sure they will remember that some of their sisters and mothers cannot speak English. So if Hawa Koomson can’t speak, then why will she be disqualified?

The NDC MPs who voted for her and gave her the highest votes did very well. They thought of Ghana. If some have even thought about the rights of the LGBTQ group, then this woman also has the right to become a minister. We cannot say that we are using “What is fish farming” to disqualify it. She even made her answer well. She just needed to add a few words. She just can’t speak English and I don’t think that should justify her disqualification ”.

He added that the argument that Hawa Koomson is unfit for the job because she lacks technical know-how is actually wrong. Citing the performance of former fisheries ministers who presumably had the technical know-how, he noted that even these could not do much to improve the contribution of the fisheries sector to the national gross domestic product (GDP). .

“Let’s allow him to work in the ministry before we can assess his performance,” he added.

Parliament, by majority decision and consensus, approved the nomination of 13 ministerial candidates for President Nana Akufo-Addo. Ten of these ministers were approved by consensus while three, namely, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, designated Minister of Information; Hawa Koomson, Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture and Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture were approved by majority vote on the floor of the House.

Meanwhile, NDC national communications director Sammy Gyamfi expressed disappointment at the Speaker of Parliament and NDC MPs in parliament by saying that the NDC leadership in parliament has been disloyal to the party after the MPs approved ministerial appointments for the president. Akufo-Addo.
