Former President John Mahama, Ofosu Ampofo and Asiedu Nketia
Stephen Atubiga, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, revealed that his colleagues, candidates in the presidential election, had scheduled a meeting on Friday, November 30, above the 400,000 GHC announced by the party.
According to him, the meeting resulted from their collective concerns about the incredible amount charged for the race by party leaders.
In addition to the drop-off fee, candidates will be required to pay 20,000 GHC to choose their forms and enter the contest in the race scheduled for January 19, 2010. However, the amount will be reduced by half for women and aspirants with physical disabilities.
Speaking to Starr News about the development, Mr. Atubiga said the fees were outrageous and did not reflect the party's values.
"Tomorrow at 4 pm we will all meet, either we will have a teleconference, or we will meet somewhere to discuss the amount. We will then meet the founder after our meeting. The money distributed did not make the party so attractive. It keeps people away from the party. The concern is to be careful not to discourage people from joining the party and hoping to be president.
Wanting to lead your party, money should not be a warning. We sow a seed of corruption in people's minds. When we come to power, Atubiga is appointed minister, he should steal money to challenge if he wants to become president, "he said.
Meanwhile, the executive director of the Social Alliance and Judge Mensah Thompson called the amount of absurdity and immoral.
He added that if the NDC claimed fees, they would have no moral motive to fight the NPP for bribery, as this would justify the many allegations of corruption brought against them while they were in power.
"This will somehow justify the various allegations of corruption against them when they were in power, because how can you really collect that money as a minister in this country? What is the salary of the minister, what is the salary of the president? It's discriminatory and absurd. If the NDC goes ahead, Ghanaians will punish them. "
