There was a tragedy in the Tema East constituency during the NDC primaries when an agent of one of the candidates tore up some of the ballots.

The agent, whose name is not known, according to Joynews's Matilda Wemegah, tore up the ballots just as the sorting was over and the counting was about to begin.

Two people – Mr. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, General Director of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and Edward Nii Bediako Crabbe, vie for the position of parliamentary aspirant in the region.

"The agent withdrew the counted ballots and tore them apart," said Matilda Wemegah.

Nobody knows the reason for the agent's action, but the police, according to Matilda, took control of the situation.

"It has become a bit chaotic at the moment the count has been suspended for the moment," she added, adding that the number of torn papers was unclear.

She reported that anxious party members gathered at the center.

Some 524 candidates aspire to become candidates for the NDC Parliament in 157 constituencies across the country.

The NDC, the largest opposition party in Ghana, voted on Saturday to select those who will represent its constituents in the 2020 elections.
