Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attacked officers from the Manhyia police station in the Ashanti region to demand the release of one of their members.
This development took place during a demonstration in Kumasi against the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as president-elect in the poll that has just ended.
Police said the group acted on false information after the incident occurred before police arrested one of the members at the point where the protest ended.
The divisional police officer from Manhyia Police Station told JoyNews that “we explained to them that no one had been arrested. The protesters will not agree.
“They claimed that one of the demonstrators had been arrested here, which was not correct. It was completely wrong. So they came to ask for this person’s release, ”said DSP Charles Appiah.
According to him, “they threw stones and some police officers were injured. A vehicle was also damaged.
He did not say how many of them were injured, however, adding that “finally we were able to take control and they left”.
Earlier today, it took police water tanks to extinguish the burning of car tires in protest against what supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party are calling a rigged election.
Others have expressed their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the election, some even protesting at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Accra.
Candidate for the presidency of the NDC, John Mahama described the verdict of the EC as fiction to favor the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
